Biography of Seung Hyun

Brief Summary

Seung Hyun is a software development professional and he has over 30 years of hands-on experience in developing software and managing software development projects. He earned a master's degree in computer science from University of South Carolina and he is working as an Independent Software Consultant in Irvine, California. As a 30-year software professional, he has a passion for innovation and development. He has extensive experience leading the software development of cutting-edge products and technologies. His primary interest lies in the triple aims of Medicare: improving the Medicare experience between provider and patient, enabling better health of populations, and reducing the cost of care.

Triple Aim

Young Ages

When I look back my young age, I was one of young kids to have to focus so hard on academia alone, but the long hours of studying and disciplines provided a good foundation in my career. My dream was to become an engineer, so I could make the best things in the world and human's life better and better.

Computer Science

Computer Science has always been one of my major interests and passions from a young age. But there was no computer science major when I entered a college. I believed that there is a creative fusion between computer science, mathematics and statistics. I was looking to gain the mathematics and statistics foundation needed do inch my way towards computer science. That was the less-than-great reason I majored in mathematics and statistics in college. I engaged in computer science related areas both in my college courses and out of college and hoped that I will be able to continue studying at graduate school.

By the middle of the 1970s, computer science careers are in high demand in South Korea. Right after I graduated the college, I started my career as a programmer. After 3 years of programming work, I decided to study further in computer science and I had the opportunity to come to the United States to do a master's degree at University of South Carolina. Thoroughly grounded in computer science fundamentals through graduate courses such as modular design, algorithms, and data structures. My research focused on computer vision, image processing and computer graphics which could utilize my strong background in mathematics and statistics. My master's thesis topic was "Display of Beta-Spline Surface Intersections Using a Scan Line Method". Later, the knowledge in spline technology helped me to find a job in United States. Outline font is based on a cubic or quadratic spline technology.

Working at Xerox

I joined Xerox in 1987 after finishing a master's degree. The digital printing had just started to become available, and Xerox was looking to improve high performance printing and to build intelligent document solutions. I began to realize how the digital printing solution would change business and people’s lives. Xerox own page description language (a.k.a. Interpress) has been developed and an outline font technology is developed along with page description languages.

After this great technology is under wrapped by PostScript, I involved in enterprise device management and output management solutions. Developed digital printing workflow solution for print shop which helps them automate everyday operations, optimize printing investments, and enable new revenue streams through creative products and services. Proactively monitor device status receiving alerts on device status and problems, allowing everyday issues to be resolved before users experience down-time. Track print usage by user and group to facilitate usage policies and ensure that devices are deployed to provide the best fit throughout the organization.

Experienced in all phases of software development cycles from the requirement capture and preliminary planning stages through implementation and maintenance. As a project manager, gained a strong working knowledge of agile project management and successfully integrated agile into our projects. My challenge was to keep an open mind about every alternative and to select one that will work for our project. Agile isn’t a silver bullet though and agile methods need to adapt to the changed context of the project. I am already successfully using some agile practices, but maybe there are new and better ways of doing things. What I am trying to do is to re-evaluate how we are doing things for continuous improvement.

Continuous Improvement

The value of print still exists today, but digital media is more popular through communication devices like smartphones. I did not feel challenged in my current position and started to looking for a new career to keep current with industry trends.

Working at Samsung

Joined Samsung Electronics' IT Solutions Division in 2007, after 20 years of experience in Xerox. As a vice president of software development and strategic business planning group, I was responsible for technical leadership and innovation, further setting the company’s technical vision, and aligning its software strategy, architecture and partner relationships to deliver customer value.

At Samsung Electronics, I started out in Software and Solution Development Management but discovered that product planning and quality management are the key problem areas to improve business performance. As a Senior Product Manager, I thrived on developing business strategies, building software product roadmaps, growing relationships with partners to deliver a comprehensive managed print services. Also, as a Software Engineering and Quality Manager, applying the software engineering technologies to prevent software issues in the field and providing proactive technical support to customers. Through defect preventive software engineering activities, successfully drive developers and effectively address customer quality issues in the early development stages. I have been very fortunate to experience many different challenges throughout my career at Samsung Electronics.

Although achieved both quality and innovation, still it was hard to make good profit margins simply by selling the product itself and suppliers. Business was mainly focused on product itself and in-direct service. The company needs to develop value added services and its infrastructure that can have a higher profit margin. Developed partnership with IBM and Accenture to launch MPS (Managed Print Services) go-to-market strategy and channel program and increase service capability and support worldwide.

Area of Interests

Thirty years ago, few people knew how to use computers, but now, almost every people has their own smartphone or/and laptop. With the developments of the economy and technology, more and more people started to use digital media instead of traditional paper media. There is a well-known principle called Moore’s Law which forecasts that computer processing power would double every two years. Of course, we could not fully comprehend the implications of that pace of change.

Information technology evolves through disruption waves. Cloud computing and machine learning algorithms spark surge of artificial intelligence software solutions and they are likely driving the top disruption wave into innovative products and services. The cloud computing exponentially accumulates data and enables the capacity, scalability and performance for big data. Cloud computing and big data technologies are converging to offer a cost-effective delivery model for cloud-based big data analytics.

Incredible advances in computing and big data that have pushed AI into multiple directions — directly impacting the health and wellbeing of people. Without a doubt, artificial intelligence is transforming the health care industry into value-based care. It is improving outcomes and changing the way providers think about providing care. “Industry analysts IDC predict that 30 percent of providers will use cognitive analytics with patient data by 2018.” It’s all starting to happen, and cognitive analytics with patient data to predict or detect major diseases. In addition, cognitive analytics is helping providers to make the best care decisions for their patients.

Computers through the advent of artificial intelligence are enabling people to do their jobs better. Instead of robots replacing humans, I see a future that is based on humans collaborating with computers to gain better outcomes.

Recent Activities

The best way to stay healthy and to reduce health care cost is to prevent disease, detect disease early when it is most treatable and curable, and manage disease so that complications can be avoided. My interests lie in helping health care providers play in providing and educating Medicare beneficiaries about potentially life-saving preventive services and screenings. While Medicare now pays for more preventive benefits, many Medicare beneficiaries do not fully realize that using preventive services and screenings can help them live longer, healthier lives.

Creating an IT startup with focus on cloud and mobile technology in health care industry and focusing on enabling smarter "Medicare Preventive Services". Deeply concern about the triple aim of Medicare: improving the patient experience, enabling better health of populations and reducing the cost of care. Try to connect the dots between payers (Medicare and insurance companies), providers (hospitals and professional doctors) and patients, leveraging the data needed to deliver predictive insights to clients, who use this knowledge to solve some of their most pressing issues and capitalize on their most exciting opportunities. As a health care professional, providers can help your Medicare patients understand the importance of disease prevention, early detection, and lifestyle modifications that support a healthier life. Insurance providers (payers) also can make better decisions to compensate for healthy outcomes rather than each service provided. Eventually, this solution could save lots of money by preventing costly diseases and it is important for our nation’s health care system.

Connect Dots

Although accumulated the solid knowledge of the 270/271/837 ANSI X.12 EDI format and developed mobile applications that consumes web services through projects. Unfortunately, it’s extremely hard to start a business without any type of funds at all. Looking for a fund to establish business ventures and to develop experience in health care industry.
